Do this with the forward clutch mated to the front pump/stator support assembly. Air moves the forward clutch piston, which can be heard and observed as air is applied. In drive with the wheels held stationary, the entire drivetrain's stationery, eliminating these items as a potential cause of the noise. Air-check the forward clutch for proper function. It's essential when diagnosing the drivetrain and planetary gearsets. I always install in the case to make sure it fits correct. When you bolt the pump halves together, you need a band ( transmission tool) to aid in correct alignment.
#HOW TO INSTALL TRANSMISSION PUMP STATOR MANUAL#
Begin with the basics, and remember, if something is not moving, it's not making a noise. After pump clearances are checked ( per assembly manual in which you need to buy to have all specs, torque specs, etc.) The pump assembly is fitted in the case to ensure its aligned. Powerglide Pump Stator Tube Product 743400ST Stator Tube made from solid heat treated 4140 steel. All Pump Bodies will interchange with stock support. Make sure it's not a problem with the engine before troubleshooting transmission noise or vibration. Stator Tube made from solid heat treated 4140 steel - This tube will NEVER 'Spin Out' as often happens with press-in designs. Make sure the filter's good before replacing the pump.ĭiagnosing a transmission is the same as anything else it often ends up being a process of elimination. It's crucial when diagnosing a transmission pump or a torque converter. It's why a worn or faulty pump makes a whining noise in all gears, including park and neutral.Ī restricted or clogged transmission filter makes the same whining noise as a faulty transmission pump.
Depress main regulator valve stop and remove retaining pin. Using PTO cover bolt, install as illustrated. It is not necessary to remove pump from Converter housing. If your Stator has the early style Babbitt bushing, replace it with the new stator support bushing (furnished). The torque converter housing is mechanically attached to the engine's crankshaft causing the pump to operate whenever the engine is running. Remove the Converter housing and Stator support assembly. Transmission pumps are driven directly from the engine through the torque converter. I use Art Carrs valve although Mike Kutrzs is the same. Replace existing pressure regulator valve/spring in rear pump body with new design valve/spring. It saves energy by reducing output without affecting speed. Remove stock stator support from rear pump body and install new hardened spline stator support. With a variable displacement pump, the pressure is allowed to decrease with lesser demand. With a fixed displacement pump, the pressure increases with rotational speed, sometimes providing unneeded pressure. Most transmissions today have variable displacement pumps that vary or change fluid pressure according to demands. Gear and rotor-type pumps are considered fixed displacement. Transmission oil pumps provide fluid pressure for the transmission and torque converter.
